A BAFTA’s breakdown: who won what?

The BAFTAs returned for another night of glitz and glamour as the very best are awarded for their work in the entertainment industry.

The annual film and television awards celebrated its 77th anniversary on February 18, 2024 after the nominations released last month.

With so much talent to be commemorated, here is a breakdown of some of the awards and who won.

Best Film – Oppenheimer

Winner of the Best Film category, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was a standout picture for many. Released in July 2023, the historic thriller tells the story of the Manhattan Project of World War II, an American secret government operation run by six scientists to create the world’s first atomic bomb before Nazi Germany.

The film has been celebrated for its suspenseful story line, unique cinematography and had viewers on the edge of their seats throughout. Nolan’s directing created a film both historically accurate and impeccably interesting for viewers, making Oppenheimer a worthy winner of the Best Film BAFTA award.

The Zone of Interest was another historical war film which undoubtedly deserved to be celebrated. Directed by Nottingham Trent University graduate Jonathon Glazier, the picture depicts the everyday life of an Auschwitz commandments and their family. The haunting historic drama executed the travesty of the time devastatingly accurate.

Poor Thing’s Emma Stone was awarded  at the BAFTA awards on Sunday, 18 February. The actress, from Arizona, has been celebrated for her current works in many an award recently. Her convincing role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things – a dark science-fiction comedy – granted her lead actress.

The lead actor award was granted to Cillian Murphy for his outstanding performance in Oppenheimer, as J. Robert Oppenheimer. The Irish actor from Cork, known for his role in 9-year-long Peaky Blinders, gave his all as one of the scientists who created the first atomic weapon.

Over the years, the British-American filmmaker Christopher Nolan has been nominated for his works with Inception and Dunkirk. Both excellent films, neither received the win for their nominated categories. The 77th BAFTA awards granted Nolan with not only one, but two awards for his brilliant blockbuster Oppenheimer. Alongside Best Film, Christopher Nolan was celebrated as Best Director.

It is fair to say that each and every nomination deserved a mention at the BAFTAs, with a year of outstanding cinema, television and production.

Further mentions to the production are the winners of makeup and costume design, which create the authenticity that creates cinematography to be remembered.
