Here’s all of the latest info you need to know about DC’s upcoming superhero films, straight from the virtual FanDome event…
DC Comics is hosting a 24-hour virtual event from 6pm BST on Saturday August 22, with Comic-Con-style panels promising details from major upcoming projects.
We’ll be covering all of the details on each of the upcoming DC Extended Universe movies, including Wonder Woman 1984, Flash and the Synder Cut of Justice League. Here’s what’s happened so far:
Wonder Woman 1984
The cast of the new Wonder Woman film and director Patty Jenkins united for a Q&A panel and a new trailer reveal.
The new trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 showed Kirsten Wiig as the Cheetah for the first time, with a comics-accurate costume complete with fur and claws.
Secondary antagonist Maxwell Lord, played by Pedro Pascal, also made an appearance in a clip potentially teasing his psychic abilities, with his hand raised as items from his office swirled around him.
During the panel, Director Patty Jenkins voiced support for the decision to continue with a theatrical release, saying: “We believe in putting it in the cinema.”
Gal Gadot, who has played Wonder Woman since her appearance in 2016’s Batman v Superman, praised the cast and crew and said: “We had such an amazing time and we got lucky that we all have such great chemistry.”
The panel also featured a surprise appearance from original the Wonder Woman actress, Lynda Carter, who claimed that Gal Gadot’s portrayal of the hero in the 2017 film helped her daughter to “finally understand what Wonder Woman means to everyone.”
The Flash
A five-minute clip from The Flash star Ezra Miller and director Andy Muschietti explained how the movie will introduce the DC multiverse to the big screen.
The upcoming Flash film, which was recently revealed have both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck reprise their roles as Batman, will open up the possibility for different iterations of DC characters to meet.
Ezra Miller, who starred as the Flash in 2018’s Justice League, said: “All of these stories and characters can start to collide.”
“I would want the Flash, in the multiverse, to meet Nicholas Cage,” he added.
Andy Muschietti also showed some concept art of the Flash’s new costume, which has a more streamlined design than the Justice League version and will be created in the film by Michael Keaton’s Batman.
The Suicide Squad
Following much fan speculation, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has announced which characters each of the main cast will be playing.
Notable reveals include Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker and Peter Capaldi as the Thinker.
Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney will also be reprising their roles from the previous film, which was released in 2016.
“The character that I was most excited to write for was Harley Quinn,” Gunn said, claiming her chaotic nature often made him feel as if she was writing the story for him.
After a brief quiz with the cast on their characters’ comic book histories, Gunn showed a behind-the-scenes reel with clips of stunts and the Squad in costume.
Idris Elba also commented on how he got into shape for the film.
“I basically didn’t do a sport, I did a general training package,” he said.
“Lots of circuits, lots of cardio workouts to get those muscles up. The work weight was so high – we were training every day.”
Zack Snyder’s Justice League
Director Zack Snyder answered fans’ questions about his previously unreleased cut of Justice League and showed the first official trailer for the project.
The trailer provided a better look at the villain Darkseid and the first appearance of his aide Desaad – both of which were cut from the theatrical version – as well as the original design for primary antagonist Steppenwolf in action.
It also included unseen clips of each member of the League, including Superman in his black post-resurrection costume.
Side characters received a share of the spotlight too, with clips showing Kiersey Clemons as the Flash’s love interest Iris, and the apparent death of Cyborg’s father.
Snyder revealed that the director’s cut will be released as four hour-long instalments on the HBO Max streaming service, but noted that they will be “bundled together” for those that would rather experience his Justice League as a single feature film.
He added that a distribution plan is being worked on for territories where HBO Max is unavailable.
“As a community, you were able to make this thing happen,” Snyder said before fan questions were relayed to him by members of the cast, including Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill.
He explained that both Ezra Miller’s Flash and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg will be more fleshed out in his edition of the film, stating that Cyborg in particular is “the heart of the movie.”
The notion of the team as a family will be a core focus of the film, with Snyder saying: “Thematically, them coming together and finding a family and support – I think that, in the end, is what drove me.”
