Netflix’s new film released today takes all the traits you would expect from a Happy Madison production (founded by Adam Sandler) and provides you with yet another comedy to take your mind away from lockdown with this new rom com.
If you are familiar with the typical Happy Madison film plot and cast, then you will be familiar with it in this film. The forming of an unlikely couple, alongside a number of weird and wacky characters that make the film even funnier to watch.
From previous Adam Sandler films such as 50 First Dates (2004), Grown Ups (2010) and Just Go With It (2011), you will easily recognise characters such as Eddie (Nick Swardson) in Just Go with it and Ula (Rob Schneider) in 50 First Dates.
We start off with Tim (David Spade) who is going on a blind date with Missy (Lauren Lapkus) who convinces him she is the girl at the bar in the blue dress being chatted up by someone. However, as of expected from any Adam Sandler classic, of course there is going to be an awkward encounter as Missy tricked Tim, or as she put it the “blind date ice breaker”.
As expected, (from Missy’s unusual character) Tim is not a fan of her or the date – as he is still getting over his ex-fiance after being cheated on. We then time jump to three months later and of course, Tim hasn’t seen Missy since and probably will never see her ever again (well, that’s what you think…)
Then, when Tim is about to jet off on holiday (which his work colleague and friend Nate sorted) he meets yet another Melissa at the airport and ends up “getting it on” in the janitors closet at the airport. However, as she needs to get her flight, she rushes off but not without giving her phone number to Tim.
Much to Tim’s delight later, Nate finds her online and finds out she was previously “Miss Marilyn”. So, Nate books him a flight to swoop Melissa away, but of course there is a mix up and the original Missy ends up on the flight with him and goes on this work holiday with him.
Of course, Tim is not happy with this, but it wouldn’t be a Happy Madison film without a couple put together who don’t want to be together. Missy proves to be as crazy as she was on that first date, but will Tim ever change her feelings towards her? Watch the film and you will find out!
What this movie did well was it provided us with the viewing we all know and love from a typical Adam Sandler film. We had our familiar crazy, wacky and wild cast that make us laugh with their bad jokes that are funny because they are bad, as well as the awkward and crude humour.
The character that always does this well is Rob Schneider as he is the craziest of them all. For some reason, in these types of films he somehow always gets injured and most likely ends up with one less body part compared to others. And as the same in this film like 50 First Dates, it was because of a shark. The comedy, yet it might be unrealistic still makes the viewing even funnier just by the fact it wouldn’t happen in real life. It would only happen in somewhere like this over the top, fictional piece.
The only pitfall that came about from this film was from the beginning, from the very first second it was predictable what was going to happen between the couple. They went on this awkward first date, one of them wasn’t going to like each other and then they would walk out of their lives and never see each other again. That is until by some sort of miracle they meet again and are stuck with each other, and I’m sure you can guess what happens from there (no spoilers!)
Also, at times Lauren Lapkus’s character as Missy can seem quite annoying at times. I understand she is not the ordinary type of girl, however she seems to be so over the top that her unrealistic character becomes quite irritating at times throughout the film.
Ultimately, The Wrong Missy is a great film to watch for any Adam Sandler fan as it provides us with the same cast and same sort of storyline that we get when watching his films and leaves us with the humorous feeling we have after watching one. However, if you are not a fan of predictable storylines then perhaps this isn’t the film for you.
