Are you counting down the days until uni starts? Do you need something to keep you occupied for the time being? Well, we have you covered with five films to get you excited.
Iām sure everyone is excited for the long-awaited return to uni. Finally, you can move out, get away from your parents, reminisce with your friends, and/or make new ones!
Here are some carefully selected films to add to your watchlist before the big move.
The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club is a cult classic and it would be criminal if it wasnāt included in this list. With the perfect amount of 80s nostalgia and timeless humour, this is a must-watch. The plot focusses on five students from five different cliques who form an unlikely bond and stand together against the evil vice-principle Mr. Vernon.
As well as this, the soundtrack is iconic. Definitely worth a quick search on Spotify – the 80s angst is unmatched.
Favourite quote: āCould you describe the ruckus, sir?ā ā Brian Johnson
Lady Bird
Greta Gerwig creates an honest and relatable portrayal of adolescence – with humour and great casting. Lady Bird is a coming-of-age story set in Sacramento. Saoirse Ronanās character Ladybird is a headstrong and difficult teen navigating the challenging summer before university. We can all in some way relate to Ladybird, especially her constant arguing with her mum, or maybe her badly dyed hairā¦
Oh, and Timothee Chalamet stars in it too!
Favourite quote: āI want you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be.ā ā Marion Mcpherson
Heathers
The 80’s equivalent to Mean Girls but with a darker twist. The āHeathersā are that perfect group of girls that rule over the school and ridicule everyone for any social faux par. The film doesnāt only focus on the school bullyās, but also the psychopathic and murderous plot to get rid of them. Thatās why Heathers has landed itself on this list, it isnāt just a back to school film but also a dark comedy.
Favourite quote: āI shop; therefore, I am.ā ā Heather Chandler
Superbad
A hilarious raunchy comedy about two friends preparing to graduate high school. The film follows their embarrassments and misadventures in trying to get with girls and buy alcohol. Johan Hill and Michael Cera play Seth and Evan perfectly, the awkward nerdy friends attempting to leave their last year of school with a bang. My go to film when in need of cheering up.
Favourite quote: āI am McLovin!ā – Fogell
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The film adaptation of Stephen Chboskyās best-selling novel is the film equivalent of an indie anthem. The Perks of Being a Wallflower has many aesthetic scenes to inspire a road trip with your new flatmates. It also deals with difficult themes of abuse, mental health, and bullying. Charlie – the protagonist – doesnāt fit in but he soon finds himself in a group, who pride themselves on being misfits, and for the first time, he doesnāt feel alone anymore.
Be careful! You will need a box of tissues and a blanket; I cry every time.
Favourite quote: āWe accept the love we think we deserve.ā – Charlie Kelmeckis
So buckle up for the next few weeks as you start to settle back into your uni life, whether you are a new or returning studentā¦
