This weeks addition in the book club is by Scarlett Acres in her review of These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong.
If you enjoy amazing diverse fantasy, then look no further.
I was lucky enough to receive an advanced reader copy (arc) of this book and it is a definite new favourite of mine.
Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, this story is based in 1920s gangster-run Shanghai, involving monsters, action and enemies to lovers. What isn’t to love?
The story follows two rival gangs trying to deal with a monster in the shadows – which creates a madness within people – causing tons of deaths. Juliette and Roma must put their differences aside to try and defeat the monster to save both of their gangs.
A standout point of this book is the inclusivity. Chloe Gong was born in Shanghai herself and her culture is represented through the book. Ultimately, making tons of people feel included after finally seeing themselves represented in a book.
The book also goes into politics with communism and colonisation within Shanghai and the struggles this causes many people of colour. It is truly heart-breaking to see people forced to be who they aren’t in order to not be judged on their culture or sexuality which is also explored through this book.
Although so much action can be confusing, Gong’s writing grasps your full attention right from the first sentence. Following two point of views, you’re able to learn about both protagonists, creating a bigger attachment between you and the characters – also the book as a whole.
Ultimately, this own-voice story is a definite need and although it was an arc for me, this book is truly five stars through and through. Thank you to the publishers via “Netgalley” and Chloe Gong for the book in exchange for an honest review. I look forward to the sequel.
Don’t forget to pre-order yours or go and pick it up on November 17, 2020.
