Preview of 2021: Movies

2020 was an unusual year – to say the least – and for the world of entertainment, it came to a halt. Many films that were anticipated for the year were sadly not shown and look to make their debut this year. But what are some of the movies we have to look forward to this year?

Here are some to look out for each month of 2021…

January

The Dig

The Netflix original film stars Harry Potter actor Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan. The story Is based on true events that took place in 1939 where rich widow Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan) hires archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) to dig up the burial mounds around her estate, and it leads to a discovery of medieval Anglo-Saxon artefacts.

February

To All the Boys: Always and Forever

In the third and final instalment of the Netflix original franchise, To All the Boys finale sees Lara Jean (Lana Condor) in her last days of high school as she prepares for college – with her boyfriend Peter (Noah Centineo) by her side. The pair face challenging decisions as both want to attend different colleges, putting their relationship to the test…

March

Coming 2 America

After three decades away (from America and the silver screen) Prince Akeem – well King Akeem now – returns to America in this long-awaited sequel with his trusty sidekick Semmi from their homeland of Zamunda. Many of the original cast returns, including his father King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones). Akeem sets to track down his long-lost son as the next heir to the throne.

April

No Time to Die

Daniel Craig stars in his final stint at James Bond in the long awaited (and long delayed) No Time to Die. Alongside the regular cast including once again Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Rory Kiennear and many more. Rami Malek joins this time as the Bond villain as Bond plans to come out of retirement…

May

Black Widow

Marvel phase four begins with Scarlett Johansson returning as the Black Widow. It is unknown what the story of Natasha Romanoff is going to be based upon, but the cast working alongside her includes David Harbour and Rachel Weisz.

June

In the Heights

In the Heights is the Broadway show that kicked off the career of Hamilton creator Lin Manuel-Miranda after the original Broadway show won four Tony Awards in 2008, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The story follows the lives of several characters in the heavily Latino neighbourhood of Washington Heights in New York.

July

Top Gun: Maverick

After 31 years, we are finally getting the Top Gun sequel we have all been waiting for! There has not been a lot of detail released just yet for the film, but we can safely say we are sure directors of the film have equipped a cast that will do the classic justice. The cast sees Tom Cruise return, as well as Miles Teller who plays Goose’s son.

August

The Suicide Squad

The 2016 release of Suicide Squad may not have got the best reviews, but the 2021 follow up will hopefully redeem itself. Most of the original cast will be returning, including Idris Elba joining. Directing will be James Gunn, before returning to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

September

Death on the Nile

Based on the Agatha Christie’s novels, Kenneth Branagh returns as fictional detective Hercule Poirot after the success of 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express. In the cast includes Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Annette Bening, Letitia Wright and many more starring.

October

Morbius

This will be Sony’s first test away after breaking with Marvel on Spider Man. The story sees Morbius, a character based on the villain of Spidey who suffers from a rare blood disease and can turn himself into a vampire to try and cure himself. Jared Leto stars.

November

Mission Impossible 7

Once again Tom Cruise returns to one of his most infamous roles in Mission Impossible. Christopher McQuarrie returns as writer – as well as directors – as he has been for the last two films.

December

West Side Story

Steven Spielberg directs the remake of the 60s musical that takes a spin on the Shakespearian classic of Romeo and Juliet. Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zelger star as Tony and Maria as two teens in New York in the 1950s. Although they both belong to rival gangs, love conquers this rivalry.

With so many films to look forward to this year, we seem to be spoilt for choice.
