Ncuti Gatwa – star of Netflix’s Sex Education – has recently been nominated for the best male performance in a comedy programme, and honestly who could disagree?
His role as Eric Effiong in the Netflix original series is unforgettable and he has had us in stitches time and time again.
He has also inspired dozens of trending memes, including his most famous line “Wash your hands you detty pig” – which became more relevant when Coronavirus came about.
Ncuti is 27 years old, and was born in Rwanda in 1992. He is the son of a journalist, but him and his family moved to Scotland after they had to flee as refugees.
He was raised in Edinburgh, and in 2013 he graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a bachelor’s degree in acting.
The school has also produced actors such as Colin Morgan who played Merlin in the popular BBC series, and Richard Madden who has most recently been in the films 1917 and Rocketman.
This BAFTA nomination is not Ncuti’s first nomination, as earlier this year he won the Broadcasting Press Guild awards for best breakthrough actor, and the Royal Television Society for the best male comedy performance.
Last year, he was also nominated for the best actor in television by the BAFTA Scotland, and he was nominated for the best kiss and best breakthrough performance by MTV Movie Awards.
Before Ncuti was on our screens as Eric he also starred in TV shows such as Bob Servant and Stonemouth, and in films such as Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans, where he played Timidius.
Ncuti will also be starring in the film The Last Letter From Your Lover, but the release date is yet to be announced.
Ncuti will be returning as Eric in season three of Sex Education – expected to return late 2021. Thanks to his success on the show, he is expected to have a net worth of $1m.
The British comedy-drama series, Sex Education, has also been nominated as the outstanding comedy series by GLAAD Media Awards.
Ncuti Gatwa is clearly an up and coming actor who is becoming more popular towards audiences. He is one to look out for in the future.
