TV Review: RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 2 Episode 7

Last Thursday (25 February), the seventh episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK aired, and the recent episode is filled with solid entertainment and drama, with this week being all about design and fashion! Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The search for the UK’s next drag superstar continues again this week, with RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Alan Carr, Graham Norton with extra special guest judge – Maya Jama!

After the eventful Snatch Game last week, and the saddening departure of newly fan favourite Tia Kofi we are now coming towards the end of the competition with only a few hurdles left along the way.

Let’s begin with the mini challenge, it’s time to read each other to filth. Lawrence and Sister Sister stood out with their complete roasting of the other contestants. If you’re new to watching Drag Race, the reading challenge is a fundamental part of the show every season.

This week the main challenge was all about creativity and the Queens had to design an outfit from scratch reflecting their new selves through fashion on the back of last year’s lockdown.

From the get-go it’s clear Awhora and Sister Sister are the frontrunners, with Sister taking all of the materials due to having an advantage from the mini challenge and Awhora previously studying fashion at university. However, is this the true outcome in the end?

On the runway this week, category – “Lockdown Supersheroes!”

Firstly, all I have to say is Awhora – WOW. This NHS runway mixed with late 2000’s Lady Gaga is absolutely brilliant. From the dramatic sleeves puffed out, to the blue painted face mask, which gives nod to Sister Sister’s entrance look with reference to Sister’s previous copying of her looks – this made me laugh so much. This look could walk on London fashion week.

I also have to give credit to Ellie Diamond’s candy, fun look which was very well constructed and a close second place, along with Bimini Bon Boulash’s remarkable Vivienne Westwood inspired contemporary look.

It was clear this week who were the tops and the bottoms, with Awhora proudly winning the design challenge and rightly so, whilst Tayce and Sister Sister were found in the bottom two – the right decision.

The lip-sync song this week was “Don’t be so Hard on Yourself” by Jess Glynne. Tayce smashed this lip-sync unsurprisingly, it was clear who was going to win before the song even started. Also, I must add, come on Drag Race UK please add better lip-sync songs, or that might just be my taste being questionable.

Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to Sister Sister. It was definitely her time to go, but she did make a name for herself during the second half of this season. This episode is one of the better ones of this season so far, who doesn’t love a creative, design challenge on Drag Race.

Next week we will see who will make it into the top five and I guarantee it will be a fight not to be missed…
