This action heavy episode features the dark ascent of Killmonger to Black Panther status, showcasing what would happen if Killmonger – the villain from Black Panther – saved Tony Stark from capture by the Ten Rings.
While being an action packed episode, it is the most confusing of the series so far. It features Killmoonger frequently stabbing people in the back in order to gain power for himself, and doesn’t stop to breathe until the second to last scene. The audience has to pay attention to the intricacies of his plan, else they will become lost. It is a good thing that audiences are familiar with the characters and their motivations as this episode is a poor entry point for new fans.
This speaks to the What If series as a whole, and that its intended audience are fans who have already seen the films. It is most prominent here.
The confusing plot aside, the action is plentiful, thus leaving little room aside for character moments. The second to last scene provides a breather, with Killmonger and TāChalla talking in the Ancestral Plane about what the cost of Killmongerās actions. It is a conversation that doesnāt reveal anything new about the character, which is a missed opportunity.
The action itself is largely generic and nothing special, with the only stand out sequence being the first scene where Killmonger saves Tony. Having him throw the missile away from Tony sells the idea that he is a competent soldier, which is something that wasnāt shown in his live action appearance.
The inclusion of Ross and him taking over Stark Industries is the most interesting aspect of the episode, as it is the US Government taking control of the company. This is something that is shown in Iron Man Two, when they try to get Tony to turn over his Iron Man suit. This makes for a much more interesting focal point for the episode, though it is understandable why it is not.
Overall, this episode is average. The plot is confusing, and there is a lack of new things to learn about existing characters and the action is nothing special. It is certainly still a pleasant watch, but it doesn’t reach the highs of past weeks.
