TV Review: White Lines

From the creators of Money Heist, this new Netflix original series sees a murder mystery unravel in Ibiza as a mourning sister sets out to uncover who murdered her beloved brother all them years ago.

After the body of DJ Axel Collins (Tom Rhys Harries) is found in the Spanish desert (20 years after his disappearance) his sister Zoe Walker flies in from Manchester with her husband to identify the body that is now mummified (beware of the scene when you see this mummy). From there, Zoe makes it her mission to discover what really happened to her brother, much to the dismay of her husband who thinks she shouldn’t go through with it after her past mental health issues.

So, Zoe (Laura Haddock) moves to Ibiza for the time being. She eventually finds Axel’s best friend who moved to Ibiza with him, Marcus (Daniel Mays). As they set out on their investigation, it is revealed they are not the only ones searching for Axel’s killer as the Calafat family (owners of the land where the body was found) set out to look for the murderer.

Told through flashbacks, we get insight into the full story told across two different decades, through the 90s when Axel and Marcus arrived in Ibiza alongside the present day as Zoe becomes detective. This is a plus of the production because these flashbacks allow us to get the full perspective, so we don’t miss anything out within the story.

Not only do we get all angles of the murder mystery, but we have it told through Zoe’s perspective as she is our narrator throughout the series. By Zoe guiding us through her journey, we gain a true insight into her thoughts and feelings, as well as the closeness she had towards her brother before he was brutally murdered.

Laura Haddock – who you may know from BBC’s The Capture and of course The Inbetweeners Movie, does well in her role as Zoe, the devastated sister who misses her brother and is determined to find out what happens to him. She plays a convincing part as she provides us with her emotional side as she tries to deal with the pain she has been handed as well as her determined side to unravel the murder mystery.

As she takes us through the story, we see a vulnerability to her character as she expresses all the emotions she was feeling through her trip to Ibiza, anger, sadness and desperate for answers to questions. These are emotions that would most likely be felt by any close family member who would be put in this situation and makes the role relatable in some way.

It is hard to find a pitfall in this series as it has everything you could want from a great and gripping series. It has a great soundtrack with the likes of some club classics and some old bangers including “Bamboleo” by the Gipsy Kings. It also provides us with an escapism as well as nostalgic viewing and is hyped as the hit of the summer.

Ultimately, White Lines is the next must-watch on your Netflix playlist as its not only at number 1 in the UK viewing for Netflix, but it is great for any fans of Money Heist as you still get the Spanish twist and a mystery that unravels as the series goes on, keeping you gripped.
