An original and creative show from one of the world’s most illustrious.
Christian Dior’s runway show was nothing short of outstanding. For many, this marks the start of Paris Fashion Week. This year saw a lot of jungle and forest-inspired looks from creative director (and first female one at that) of the house ~ Maria Grazia Chiuri. The Italian Fashion designer worked with Paris-based environmental company, Coloco, whose work regarding green spaces inspired the runway looks and got Maria thinking about sustainability and how that could be portrayed.
Another key source of inspiration for the season came from Catherine Dior, sister of Christian, who was a concentration camp survivor that emerged from World War II to become a beloved, well-known gardener / botanist. She moved through post-war gloom life by gardening galore.
Many years on and we are on the verge of severe environmental disaster and climate change is one of the biggest problems facing the world today ~ what a sad contrast.
However, this means that ethically, Dior’s runway show was on point.
The clothes looked amazing and came through in true, Chiuri style. The jackets looked box-like and somewhat rectangular, there were lots of high necklines and long sleeves, and kick it all off – eco-friendly hiking boots as well as earthy espadrilles. There were also a lot of gold silhouettes under a banner asking,
‘What If Women Ruled the World?’
Chiuri sent out plenty of gold fringe and gunmetal suiting and tapping into much needed use of feminism. As much as the sustainability theme is noticeable, it is also important and Maria GraziaChiuri has offered a collaborative piece that will not grow and be remembered as only authentic, but also emotional piece that will grow in value due to its weighty and timely subject.
