Childcare supported Bastille on their last arena tour and now they are headlining their very own ‘Luckyucker’ tour, which is heading for Nottingham. Annie Mac (Radio 1) has said, ‘I love this band.’ So do we, Annie, so do we…
We spoke to the band’s frontman, Ed Cares, to find out what Childcare can offer audiences in terms of music and merch – and their craziest Freshers stories!
Childcare consists of Londoners Ed Cares (vocals), Rich Le Gate (guitars), Emma Topolski (bass), Glyn Daniels (drums). The band formed when frontman, Ed,(at the time was working as ‘one of west London’s most in-demand male nannies’) was encouraged to pursue his musical ambitions by his then six-year old charge, Katie; who had heard him humming one of his songs.
When asked to describe their sound, Ed chose the phrase “a 2:1 in graduate-level pop”, although I fear he is just being modest.
Ed exclusively tells us that, as well as the current ‘Luckyucker’ EP, the band are going to be busy planning another single in and that we can also expect “approximately 40 Instagram posts by the end of the year.”
Comparisons to The Police and Blur have been made, yet they have their own skewed, idiosyncratic, art-punk pop style and covered Blondie’s “Hanging On The Telephone” as one of their earliest tracks.
Childcare performed at popular Nottingham venue, The Bodega in January this year, whilst supporting To Kill A King. Tour life meant they “didn’t [get to see much of the city] then, unfortunately.
“My main experience of Nottingham in my life so far is getting lost and getting tickets for driving in the ‘buses and taxis’ only bit of the town.” Hopefully, this time around the London four-piece will get to explore everything this fantastic city has to offer while they are here, including taking selfies near the Left Lion- and hopefully avoiding any fines!
Freshers can have a reputation for getting up to wild antics. “What’s the craziest thing Ed Cares has done?” he is asked. His reply? “Just had a glass of squash using double strength squash and used slightly more than half of the normal amount of squash.” He omits the fact that his music videos see him running down the street and dancing on the roof of his house; as well as inviting fans to ‘Playdates’ shows in a secret location.
At the show on Monday (October 15th), there will be new songs played for the first time and, afterwards, loads of merch for fans to spend their student loans on! “We will have new T-shirts and vinyl’s and posters, ” Ed Cares teases. But first, grab a ticket. You won’t regret it!
Childcare play Red Room October 15, 2018, with support from Ava Saint.
Childcare’s single, ‘Man Down (King Kong Shake)’ is available now, as is the ‘Luckyucker’ EP.
