Single Review: The 1975 – If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)

Since hearing it live at their concert back in February, this song has been stuck in my head like no other…

It’s usually no fun being at a concert where you don’t know the words but the nod to eighties synthpop and the surprising sax solo made me want to try my absolute hardest to sing and dance along as much as possible before it was over.

After its debut on their UK tour for their upcoming album at the beginning of this year, it has been dubbed by fans as “the only song where everyone knows the lyrics before it’s even released.” I remember feeling the excitement during their concert when I heard the first few bass lines which I was already familiar with by countlessly re-watching shaky phone footage posted by fans on Twitter who had been fortunate enough to hear it before I did.

Bearing striking resemblance to Me and You Together Song in both lyrics and tone, Matt Healy is again singing about an online romance by enveloping the lyrics in a dreamy guitar and saxophone riff. Although the premise of the song is definitely a little less romantic than Me and You, the lyrics don’t really have a factor as you’ll find yourself wanting to sing and groove along anyway as soon as you’re hit with the first few chords, similar to the effect of The Sound and Chocolate where the band retreat back to the influence of 80’s pop.

This, accompanied by a simple black and white music video, is sure to enhance the nostalgia of fans who were around for the 2013 era of their debut album. The band have become known for their more recent songs, such as People and Birthday Party, for having a political and personal basis. However, this is an uplifting and infectious addition to the new album which has taken such simple lyrics and turned it into a track which will force you to dance from the moment it starts.
