Music giant, Spotify, has provided our annual Spotify Wrapped statistics allowing us to look back on the music that has made our 2022.
With 2023 around the corner, meaning only one thing for music lovers; Spotify Wrapped time!
Here is a rundown of Platform member’s top artists and songs:
Louise Walt – Music Editor
To kick off my Spotify Wrapped was an unsurprising total of over 42,220 minutes of music listened to.
My song of the year, which was listened to 231 times, was the classic Fontaines D.C. tune ‘I Love You‘ which was expected. From the first time I heard the track to now I still feel engrossed by Grian Chatten’s vocals as the song climaxes to harsher vocals, lyrics of frustration and pounding drums.
‘Charlie’ by Everyone You Know was my second most listened to song. This groovy tune demands attention sampling The Streets’ ‘Weak Become Heroes’.
‘2am’ and ‘Pizza Boy’ embody my love of indie pop with catchy lyrics and upbeat instrumentals making them easy listens.
‘Long Way Off’ was a standout song in Sam Fender’s second album, ‘Seventeen Going Under’. This song proves the power of Sam’s vocals as it progresses into a melodic climax with a punchy bass line.
After having Palace’s latest album, ‘Shoals’, on repeat for days on end it was a shock to see not one of their songs make my top five.
My top 100 songs predominantly consisted of Everything Everything. The underrated indie rock band have six albums of experimental yet exceptional music under their belt. Their 2017 album, ‘A Fever Dream’, is an eye-opening album with politically charged lyrics and electrifying instrumentals with frontman, Jonathan Higgs’, impressively broad vocal range recognised. ‘Night of the Long Knives‘ and ‘Run the Numbers‘ are always my go to songs for any occasion. Definitely a band for indie music lovers to check out.
Every year Foals takeover my Spotify Wrapped and this year was no exception as they were my top artist, and I was in their top 0.05% of listeners.
Scarlett Acres – Head of Marketing & Treasurer
Seeming to be a dedication to Sam Fender, my Spotify Wrapped was overtaken by the Geordie singer.
Four out of five of my top songs are Sam Fender, meaning it was no surprise to see I was in the top 0.5 per cent of his listeners.
The 2019 single ‘All Is On My Side’ was streamed 68 times, with a total of 2,796 minutes listening to my favourite singer of 2022.
Previously loved artists like Harry Styles and Sabrina Carpenter are in the mix with songs ‘Lights up’ and ‘Matilda’ from Harry Styles, and Sabrina’s album ‘Emails I can’t Send’ which quickly became a 2022 favourite.
Along with these came some new favourites including Little Simz, PinkPantheress and The 1975.
After seeing Little Simz at Leeds Festival, I knew she would quickly dominate my playlist with incredible hits in her Mercury Prize winning album ‘Sometimes I might be Introvert’.
My music taste has been changing a lot these last few months with indie and indie-pop climbing into my top five genres.
I am extremely excited to see where this takes my Spotify Wrapped next year!
Will Hugall – Deputy Editor
My listening on Spotify is notoriously varied, and just like last year, I had no idea what to expect when the Wrapped list was published.
In a 2022 that has been unpredictable and filled with all kinds of emotions, I think my list does present a pretty good snapshot of life recently.
I was, however, initially surprised to see George Ezra top the charts for my most listened artist and most listened song.
This dates back to my obsession with the ‘Gold Rush Kid’ album over the summer; Ezra truly being the modern king of the summer tune.
Ezra is far from the coolest artist to top anyone’s list this year, but when I needed three albums to rely on as downloads for my holiday in Greece over the summer, I turned to his ever-reliable earworms.
‘Anyone For You (Tiger Lily)’ was my top song of the year, albeit only listened to 30 times – a mere stain on the 77 listens ‘The Look’ got last year.
The other cuts may regain me slight credibility, as Wolf Alice and Lime Cordiale slotted in as my second and third most listened to artists, while Fontaines D.C.’s ‘Jackie Down The Line’, Holly Humberstone’s ‘Scarlett’, Wolf Alice’s ‘Smile’ and Wet Leg’s ‘Wet Dream’ rounded off my top five songs.
Elsewhere, I could thank my girlfriend for Chris Brown’s appearance in my top five – the joys of a shared account! – and with The Beatles at #5, well, I could be pigeonholed as the most basic Spotify user ever.
I’ll defend this list to the hilt, though; it’s a great insight and is littered with songs that I was obsessed with at certain stages of the year.
Right, I’m off to tune into the playlist in full!
Ellie Ruff – Head of Design
Ellie’s Spotify Wrapped shocked us all when it came to an astonishing 131,812 minutes of music streaming across the year.
With Taylor Swift’s new album ‘Midnights’ and multiple of Taylor’s re-released versions to listen to from the previous year, it was no surprise to see her take the top stop for many Spotify users.
Mainstream duo, The Chainsmokers, and Tate McRae also made my top five artists with both releasing new albums in the past year.
Drum and bass ensemble Hybrid Minds made the cut after a successful year of touring and collaborative singles with artists including Birdy and Tom Walker.
