After the huge success of his collaboration with Chase & Status last year, it’s been a whirlwind of a year for BBC Sound of 2017 nominated Tom Grennan. We were very lucky to chat to him before he kicked off his UK Autumn tour at the Rescue Rooms…
Firstly, 2017 has been a huge year for you, you’ve played festivals, touring frequently, what’s been the highlight of the year for you so far?
It’s all pretty highlighty. I’d never thought I’d be in the position that I’m in. I’d say this whole thing is a highlight and it always will be until I stop doing it. Playing festivals, playing shows, selling out shows, it’s all pretty highlight, like a highlighter pen!
How was festival season for you?
It’s been busy. It was sometimes wet, sometimes sunny, sometimes wet, sometimes sunny. It was good though.
I saw you at Y NOT festival in the summer, how did you find it?
Yeah, that was fab, glad we did it on the first night though.
You released your brand new single “Royal Highness”, can you tell us a little what the track is about?
“Royal Highness” is a song about having fun and just about relationships. But yeah, I went into the studio and I wanted to write a fun uplifting song and I think that is what it does.
And very excitingly, you announced the title of your long-awaited debut album, “Lighting Matches”, how does it feel to of finally announced it? It’s been a long time coming really hasn’t it?
I don’t know if it’s been a long time coming. I still think I could have announced it later on but it’s a sick album man and I’m so proud of it. And it is out next year because not many people know about me, I’m still booing up the fans. Hopefully, people buy it and if one person buys it then I’ll be happy that I’ve changed someone’s life. But if loads of people buy it that will change my life and I hope they do!
Are there any surprises on the album that you can maybe hint to us about? Any collabs?
No collabs on the album, but expect epic, expect choirs, expect brass, expect orchestras, expect the whole shebang.
Tom Grennan played at Rescue Rooms last month and is playing at Rock City in March next year. You can buy tickets for this here
