Wallows announce new album and signal change with single ‘Especially You’

After the release of their 2020 EP ‘Remote’, Wallows, made up of Dylan Minnette, Cole Preston and Braeden Lemasters, are back with their latest single ‘Especially You’.

The single sets the tone for the band’s second album, ‘Tell Me That It’s Over’, which is due to be released on March 25.

Especially You is the second single from Tell Me That It’s Over after the preppy ‘I Don’t Want To Talk’, which already set a different tone to indie fan-favourite debut album ‘Nothing Happens’ when it was released back in October 2021.

Sonically catchy, as with a multitude of Wallows’ discography, this irresistibly upbeat single experiments with the juxtaposition of an infectious melody and contemplative lyrics.

Vocalist Dylan Minnette explains that the meanings behind the track include “stressing over the smallest things for no reason”, namely the insecurities that often accompany the early stages of a relationship.

Minette added that “it’s definitely self-aware about the that I’m doing this all to myself”.

A synth-heavy production coupled with a pulsing bass and spirited yet introspective chorus almost hint at a 1980s inspiration, which again signals a different route for the band and their eagerly-awaited new project.

The accompanying visuals, filmed in the style of a one-scene take, play into the lighter themes of the song’s instrumentations as each band member plays a number of roles on set, including a personal assistant and a photographer.

Wallows are no strangers to success, with their fanbase growing consistently since the release of their debut Nothing Happens in 2019 as lead single ‘Are You Bored Yet?’ reached huge levels of popularity due to its growth on TikTok.

However, after hearing the first two singles from Tell Me That It’s Over, it seems as though the maturing trio are experimenting with their sound and therefore showcasing a new and exciting direction for their 2022 album release.

Tell Me That It’s Over is set for release on all formats on March 25, with the band also set to appear at Reading & Leeds Festival this summer before a seven-date UK tour in January 2023.
