Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements of the black community and an opportunity to acknowledge their impact on society.
The first UK Black History Month took place in October 1987 in London, as part of the African Jubilee Year.
The NTU community will celebrate Black History Month 2021 by hosting nine commemorative events and activities that are open to all students and staff.
A statement on the University’s website reads: “We recognise that the Black history experience is not limited to one month each year, and have made a commitment to work year-round to host a diverse programme of events and resources to help create a more equal future for everyone.”
The first event, a Peer Support Scheme meet-up, will take place on Tuesday, October 5 at 2 pm in the Mezz Lounge and is open to all NTU students.
Other various events will run throughout the month, including workshops and talks, and even a debate on Nottingham’s Black History.
Black History Month UK magazine has launched a new campaign to mark Black History Month 2021.
Following the murder of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police officers, multiple Black Lives Matter protests have taken place across the world.
This inspired Black History Month UK magazine to call their new campaign “Proud To Be”.
The campaign will invite Black and Brown people of all ages throughout the UK to share what they are proud to be.
