Nottingham’s biggest cinema – Cineworld in The Cornerhouse – is set to close on February 2, 2025.
But relief comes for moviegoers as it has already been confirmed that the space will be taken over by Vue.
Cineworld’s closing was confirmed in a statement from the company on January 13.
“We regret to inform you that, following the landlord’s decision to reject our proposals, we will be closing 2nd February 2025,” a spokesperson said.
“Thank you to all of you movie-loving customers for choosing us over the years.”
Only a day later (January 14), it was confirmed that Vue would be moving into The Cornerhouse after a period of refurbishment.
“We’re very much looking forward to bringing guests the ultimate big screen experience later this year and will share more information in due course,” a Vue spokesperson said.
Students will be happy to know that, although it’s unclear if Vue will offer student tickets like Cineworld did, their prices are still affordable – and sometimes cheaper.
The prices of Vue tickets vary based on location and whether the cinema offers recliner seats. For example, Vue York is entirely recliner and the cheapest tickets start at £6.99 online or £7.99 in person.
Vue Birmingham, which offers standard seats as well as recliner, have tickets starting at £4.99 online or £5.99 in person.
Cineworld Nottingham’s closing comes amid issues for the company, as they announced in December 2024 that six of its UK branches would shut.
The companies Weymouth branch closed on December 30 and Castleford, Leigh, Middlesborough, Northampton and Poole closed on January 19.
It’s also the second recent closure in The Cornerhouse after Skybar closed in August 2024. The venue closed its doors permanently after temporarily shutting when a man was stabbed on site a month earlier.
Other cinemas in Nottingham include Showcase, The Savoy and Broadway.
