Historic building catches fire next to NTU accommodation

An iconic Nottingham building caught fire recently next to a Nottingham Trent University (NTU) accommodation building.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue were called to Bar Lane Industrial Estate in Old Basford on June 18 after a fire broke out at the historic former Vedonis building.

The incident was first reported at 5.53pm on Saturday and lasted all the way until around 9.30pm.

The former lace clothing manufacturer is located directly next to Nottingham Trent University accommodation, The Maltings.

NTU Fine Art Student Daria Likhacheva who lives at The Maltings accommodation said: “I think the building is a big part of the whole aesthetic of the area.

“I was really upset to hear about the fire, and I hope it didn’t affect the integrity of the building too much.

“It would be a shame to lose such a signature building in Basford.”

Nottingham City Council councillor, Linda Woodings, who represents Basford, said: “A second tragedy at Bar Lane Industrial Estate. The historic Vedonis building up in flames.

“Just over one year on from 70 mature trees being hacked down by the site owner.

“They have to be replaced.

“But I really hope the building can be saved.”
