Large sections of Nottingham’s student community will join in with a nationwide boycotting of night-time economy venues tonight (October 27) following a rise in reports of drink spiking.
The boycott, organised by a group of students going by the name of ‘Girls Night In’ on Instagram, has been arranged to raise awareness of the issue of drink spikings.
Figures released by Nottinghamshire Police to the BBC said that there had been 32 reports of people having their drinks contaminated in recent weeks and 15 reports of spiking involving needles.
A recent statement by the Girls Night In group read: “We would like to reinforce that our boycott is not a stay at home order.
“The purpose of our boycott is to encourage all local clubs/bars/pubs to re-examine their precautions, to ensure that all members of the Nottingham community can feel safe again.”
Several popular clubs in Nottingham are set to remain closed tonight, including Pryzm and Ocean.
A further six bars in the city centre have said they will close at 10 pm to support the boycott.
