As the NTSU elections are nearing, we got in touch with the two candidates running for the Brackenhurst and Confetti Officers role to help you get to know them beyond their manifestos.
The Brackenhurst Officer will provide a link between the Brackenhurst based students to students on other campuses and the full-time Exec Officers.
They will also identify and campaign on issues which are of particular or unique importance to Brackenhurst students.
The Confetti Officer will provide a link between the students at Confetti to students on other campuses and the Student Council.
They will also seek opportunities for the Union to develop activities, services and improve representation at Confetti, as well as ensure that Confetti students’ concerns are voiced.
Here is what this year’s Brackenhurst and Confetti Officers candidates had to say.
Margaux Butler, third-year Ecology and Conservation student
Why are you fit for the Brackenhurst Officer role?
The main reason I applied for this position is because I have had such an incredible time studying and living on the Brackenhurst Campus, so I would love the opportunity to help current and future students feel the same.
I believe this passion makes me an appropriate candidate for the Brack Officer role.
How will you help Brack students feel more included in the NTSU and NTU community?
Location wise, our campus is very isolated, meaning the Brack lot are a very tight-knit bunch.
While this is no bad thing, I would like to help everyone feel more included and connected to NTU and NTSU as a whole.
My goal is to improve communication across the rest of the university, by holding more online Q&As, and holding spaces for honest, open discussion.
It’s time Brackenhurst students were given a real voice.
Let’s put Brack back on the map!
Laura Warren, second-year Audio and Music Technology student
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am very passionate about music and enjoy spending most of my time in the Confetti Studios.
I spent a lot of my free time doing uni work but I try to make time for my hobbies (rock climbing, squash and going to the gym).
I also am a student mentor and ambassador so many people from Confetti have probably seen me around from various events and just from being at Confetti lots.
Why are you fit for the Confetti Officer role?
I think I would be a good fit for the role because I have some good ideas for changes within Confetti.
I really enjoy helping people and I want to extend this to the entirety of Confetti.
I have discussed the current issues with the incumbent Confetti Officer.
I feel like the NTSU can help to include Confetti more to create more inclusivity between NTU and Confetti.
I’ve got the ambition to strive for these changes and improve Confetti for the students.
How will you help Confetti students feel more included in the NTSU and NTU community?
I aim to push for more events aimed at including Confetti students.
This would be a good way to include the new course ‘Event Management’ as they could help run the events.
I also want to get the Creative Quarter Campus renamed to Confetti Campus, so that it is more accessible to the NTU students on the websites – this would help spread awareness of Confetti, especially as Confetti is the only school in the Creative Quarter Campus.
Confetti also needs better signposting to NTU resources such as learning disability help.
The Confetti timetables can’t be integrated into the NTU app either, which adds to the divide.
I think a lot of smaller fixes would help to make Confetti feel like the integral part of NTU that it is.
