‘It gives people a place to be a part of a community’ – Nottingham artists celebrate LGBTQ+ gallery opening

A new LGBTQ+ art space has opened in Hockley and has since received support from the local community.

Niche Artefact is a non-profit community group and creative collective founded by artist Robin Da Silva.

Organisations such as The Spencer Trust have donated to help fund the creative space, which officially opened on September 17.

“It is incredibly validating for us to do what we do, and our goal is to engage more organisations to help keep us alive,” Robin said.

The studio, located in the new Hockley Emporium shop on Pelham Street has opened its doors with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by supporters.

It is set to become a free-entry space for the public to enjoy and purchase a wide range of original artwork.

Around the studio, portraits of Princess Diana and paintings representing The Birth of Pride are featured. Niche’s past exhibitions have seen the likes of Erotica, Mythology Gods & Monsters and The Golden age of Hollywood.

Local artist, Kasia Ostrowska, said: “I’ve gained so much confidence in myself and my work.

“The different themes and topics in the showcase have allowed me to work up new inspiration and have different things to speak about.”

The night began with a welcome speech from Robin before visitors were invited upstairs to explore the art space within the emporium.

Pamphlet lists were placed next to art pieces to provide a description, medium and the cost, helping to make art more accessible to new buyers and enthusiasts.

With the ethos of ‘community, creation and inclusivity’, Niche Artefact has tried to infuse this in every part of their organisation – from supporting local emerging artists to training performers to a professional standard using their in-house team.

Another local artist and supporter, Kaj Rolfe said: “I’m not a public speaker but my art is my voice, they are so community orientated and they embrace everybody.”

James Karden, owner of Hockley Emporium and Niche Artefact volunteer, will be running the gallery for the creative collective. Opening its own doors in December 2024, the emporium welcomes visitors with downstairs seating and a bar.

James said: “We would end up with pieces of art left over from other shows, but now we can change that.

“People can go to the studio to see the artwork and buy it.”

Niche Artefact will be hosting more upcoming events throughout the year. The next exhibition will be hosted on February 13- titled ‘Studio 54’ at the Revolution de Cuba bar.

The theme explores the art and culture of the legendary New York Nightclub, Studio 54 in the 1970s.

David Beer, Trustee and live producer at Niche Artefact said: “I’ve worked in the arts for many years, and I’ve seen so many talented people without a platform, Niche provides that.

“It gives people somewhere to put their work and be a part of a community.”

‘Studio 54’ will feature musical performances and art unveilings, where artists will be invited to talk about their pieces on stage.

On the night, there will also be a silent auction where guests will use tokens to bid on unveiled art items anonymously.

This is a unique concept pioneered by Robin allowing guests to purchase in a discreet manner.

Any unsold artworks will be displayed in the new gallery for the public to visit and acquire.

The Hockley Emporium is open every day from 11-6.
