Nottinghamshire Police have launched an investigation after discovering human remains in a highly populated student area of Nottingham.
Workmen discovered what is suspected to be a human skull off Rossington Road, Sneinton, shortly after mid-day.
Police are now carrying out forensic examinations on the bones, as well as holding a wider search of the area.
Several lines of enquiry are being explored to determine whether what is believed to be a human skull is linked to any past investigations.
A statement from Nottinghamshire Police confirmed one line of enquiry is whether the discovery is associated to the murder of 50-year-old Kevin Kennedy, eight years ago.
Peter Healy, 51, of Lord Nelson Street, Sneinton, was convicted of his murder in 2013 and ordered to serve a minimum of 21 years.
He was aso sentenced to five years for perverting the course of justice.
Detective Inspector Steve Wragg said: “Our investigations are still in their early stages and we remain open-minded as to whether these suspected human remains may be linked to any historic cases.
“It is now essential that we complete a detailed and thorough wider search of the area to establish if any further remains are present.
“Specialist DNA and dental tests will now be carried out on the bones as part of the identification process.”
The location of the remains is around a half hour walk from Nottingham Trent University’s Newton building.
