Nottingham Trent University announced that they are investigating after one of their students posted a potentially offensive picture on social media.
The picture shows the student in a black charcoal face mask, where they claimed they would “wear this to Ink”, one of Nottingham’s most popular nightclubs.
The image was originally posted to Nottingham’s Buy/Sell Facebook group but quickly circulated across other social networks.
A spokesperson for Nottingham Trent University said: āWe are aware of a post on social media which contains offensive content and have launched an immediate investigation into this matter.
“As part of this investigation we are talking to a current NTU student,” they added.
āRacism is not tolerated at NTU ā we are a large and diverse university and incredibly proud of our inclusive community.
“Any complaints regarding alleged racist behaviour are dealt with seriously and swiftly and, where necessary, appropriate action taken under our Student Code of Behaviour.ā
The student has since spoken to the Nottingham Tab and claims the photo was from “years ago”.
She said: “I am so disgusted in myself that I am even having to write something like this, I can only apologise to everyone I have offended.”
“I never wanted anyone else to have to see this mistake, it was not posted for the world to see in a malicious way or targeted as an attack towards any person or group ā but only as an ignorant moment of stupidity within a small private group chat ā this is still no excuse for the content and I am so very embarrassed.”
“I want you to know that I have taken responsibility for my actions and these past few days have been a time of reflection and facing everything head on,” she added.
The University of Nottingham were also made aware of the situation on social media and responded online.
