John Collins, Senior Lecturer at NTU, will be hosting a Facebook pub quiz on Saturday to help spread awareness and raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
The MND association is an organisation which helps those who suffer from MND and their carers.
People having this condition are particularly vulnerable to Covid-19, as their respiratory system is often already compromised by MND.
Julia Beales, Senior Engagement Fundraiser for the MND Association, said: “With so many fundraising events postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak we expect to lose around a third of our income this year”.
The online pub quiz idea emerged as a response to the London Marathon being postponed until October. This was one of the biggest fundraising events of the year.
Julia added: “John Collins contacted the Motor Neurone Disease Association with the suggestion of hosting the virtual pub quiz.
“His brother, Pete, was due to be taking part in the London Marathon in April.”
John Collins told us more about their journey so far: “My brother and I have raised more than £100,000 between the two of us over the last ten years or so
“I lost my Dad to Motor Neurone Disease back in 2008 so having the chance to help other people who are currently battling the same condition is a great opportunity.”
Anyone who would be taking part in the pub quiz will be asked to make a voluntary donation towards the MND association, with a suggested amount of £5 per household.
John Collins added: “It’s a chance for people to do something fun, challenge themselves, pit their wits against friends and family and all while raising money and awareness for a great cause”.
The pub quiz will be live on Facebook on the MND association Facebook page at 7pm on Saturday, 11th April.
