Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died tonight, September 8, at the age of 96.
After reigning for 70 years, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, who had recently experienced increased mobility issues which prevented her from carrying out duties, died at Balmoral Castle.
Following concerns about the Queen’s health earlier on Thursday, senior royals, including now King Charles III and his son William, gathered at the Scottish estate.
At 6:30pm today, a brief statement from Buckingham Palace read: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Her Majesty’s sudden death comes only two days after Prime Minister Liz Truss travelled to Balmoral on Tuesday to formally be appointed by the Queen.
Speaking of the devastating news, Ms Truss said: “Queen Elizabeth II was the rock on which modern Britain was built.
“Through thick and thin, Queen Elizabeth II provided us with the stability and strength that we needed.”
Following the announcement, Nottingham Trent University said: “The NTU community of staff and students is deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.
“All our thoughts are with her family at this time.
“Our campuses remain open, and as we await further guidance from the Palace and Government activities will continue as planned.”
