A new ‘rainbow road’ crossing has been created on Nottingham Trent University’s (NTU) Clifton campus as part of a new initiative by the student’s union.
The installation of the brightly coloured crossing comes following student feedback surrounding student inclusivity.
The flag, which was first designed by Daniel Quasar, was named the ‘Progress Pride’ flag in 2017 to include the colours representing the Transgender community as well as those originally included in the Pride flag.
The black and brown stripes featured in the crossing also aim to recognise the BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) members of the LGBT+ community that are often overlooked.
The student’s union Gender Officer, Chelsea Sowden, believes the introduction of the crossing will allow students to feel more welcomed at the University.
She told us: “I’m so excited about the installation of the rainbow road at Clifton.
“I saw the Pride flag on Maudsley at the City campus the day I enrolled at NTU and I instantly felt at home, so I’m really pleased that so many other students will get to experience the same kind of welcome.
“It’s a great way to visibly show our commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, to celebrate our wonderfully diverse student community, and a brilliant way to mark LGBTQ+ History Month.”
Student’s Union President, Bradley Fox, also shared the news on social media.
Benjamin Abbott, 21, Gay officer for NTU’s Pride society expressed his excitement at the introduction of the rainbow crossing.
He told us: “I believe the new rainbow road at the Clifton campus is an amazing first step at representing the diverse and cultural side of Nottingham Trent University.”
“It is a wonderful addition that can help make new and current students that identify as LGBT+ feel more welcome, whilst also being the start of true openness within the community.
“It makes me proud to be a part of a diverse university.”
