You may have spotted a red sun looming over you as you walked between lectures. It’s enough to make you blink twice on a Monday morning. But what is the actual meaning behind it?
Hurricane Ophelia, which has hit Ireland today and is travelling to England, is the cause behind it.
The ‘red sun’ has been spotted in the West Midlands, North West, North East and South West.
Hurricane Ophelia is a tropical storm, and it is dragging up air from southern Europe and Africa, the Met Office reports.
The particles from this then reflected to create the appearance of a ‘sunset’, even though it only appeared at midday.
“Because the dust is so high, light from the sun is scattered in the longer wavelengths, which is more the red part of the spectrum, so it appears red to our eyes,” BBC Weather reporter Simon King said.
Have you got any photos of the red sun over Nottingham Trent University? Send them to us and we could include them in this article!
