Nottingham Trent Students’ Union (NTSU) has received a proposal aimed at stopping the national anthem from being played at Varsity games.
The suggestion was submitted in the form of a Big Idea on the NTSU website by a student who wished to remain anonymous on February 6.
The Big Ideas scheme is a quick way for students to suggest changes to the student experience that their peers can vote on.
So far, the Big Idea regarding the national anthem at Varsity games has received three upvotes and one downvote.
In a joint statement, Benedict Wills, SU President, and Jodi Stephens, VP Sport, told Platform: “Big Ideas are proposed to enable the Union to take a position on a particular issue raised by students.
“As it is a live idea, it has not yet gone through our democratic procedures and, therefore, we don’t have a current view.
“It may be useful to note that the National Anthem is only played at certain Varsity events where that sport has a wider tradition of doing so.
“The decision is ultimately down to the teams involved in the specific sport and the Varsity organisers.
“We will make sure we communicate to students the decision over the outcome of this Big Idea.”
This year’s Notts Varsity series, which started on Monday, February 6 with a sold-out Ice Hockey game, will resume on Sunday, March 26 with American Football.
