A student due to start his first year at NTU has been suspended after there were complaints about his Tinder profile picture.
In this picture, the student was posing next to a sleeping Orthodox Jewish man on the London Underground, however, this image was digitally edited to feature a Palestinian flag on the man’s mouth.
It was initially shared by a student at the University of Cambridge on Twitter, where it has spread over the social media website with some people tweeting to describe the image as “disgraceful” and “horrendous”, whilst others have come to the student’s defence claiming that the picture was “a joke”.
A Nottingham Trent University spokesperson said: “We launched an immediate investigation the moment we were made aware of a screen grab circulating on social media, in which NTU was mentioned in an individual’s personal profile.”
“We acted very quickly to identify an individual who had not yet started his first year at the university,” they added.
“We are proud of our diverse and inclusive community and do not tolerate any form of hate crime, including anti-Semitism.”
This incident has drawn the attention of various people, with actress Tracey Ann Oberman, known for her role on Eastenders, even writing a tweet to demonstrate her disgust at the photo, which has been liked and re-tweeted hundreds of times.
This comes off the back of many anti-semitic comments recently, making people aware of how they are conducting themselves online.
Nottingham Trent University have dealt with the issue by suspending the student in question, who was due to start his first year a few weeks ago, following the disciplinary panel’s investigation about the picture.
Students facing anti-semitism or hate crime of any form can contact the University or report it online to the anti- hate website True Vision.
