Growing up near to Alton, it became a ritual for a bunch of us to get to together for a long day of rollercoasters and a night of fright at Scarefest.
For those of you who don’t know, Alton Towers (which is only 45 miles away from Nottingham) put on their huge Scarefest events throughout October to celebrate Halloween.
On selected dates, the park is transformed into a spooky scare village, with rides open until 9pm for a whole new moon-lit theme park experience.
If riding in the dark isn’t enough, a normal day-pass will also give you free access to the House of Monsters maze and Freak Show scare zone (Not suitable if, like me, you have a fear of clowns.)
Feeling daring? You can buy online discounted tickets for the three multi-award winning, and a hell of a lot more terrifying, scare mazes. (Make sure you book online regardless as they are more expensive on the day.)
A claustrophobic mine and a post-apocalyptic sewer are two settings you’ll experience with this ticket, alongside the park’s oldest-running maze, Terror of the Towers which has the most realistic location of them all, the Alton castle ruins.
Scarefest’s 2017 addition, The Welcoming: To be Chosen is the most extreme experience that puts you face-to-face with a cult who make you centre of their hair-raising Halloween ritual.
Never entered a scare maze? Here’s what to expect:
- Form a line holding onto the person in front of you – there is no return.
- Live actors who have been given a creepy makeover (or makeunder should I say).
- Themed props, gloomy settings and eerie darkness.
Your Trip
- The park will be open from this Friday every day up until the 31st.
- If you’re looking to visit, the X52 bus will transport you straight from Nottingham right to the Alton Towers doorstep. However, this excludes weekends.
- The Alton Towers app will be useful to download as it will update you with live queue times and the days offers throughout your visit.
- Student Beans are offering £24 tickets, but this is for normal day-passes only.
Even if you don’t completely enjoy the mazes, it will give you some great costume ideas for next Halloween!
