In a a fairly quiet game Basford United weathered Prescot Cables’ first half rally to earn a point.
Basford continued their strong start with a home point against Prescot Cables to bring the team up to 11th in the Northern Premier League.
After advancing to the FA Trophy third round with a 2-1 away win at National League South side St Albans, the Ambers looked to continue their impressive form against Prescot.
The away side controlled much of the first half but created only half-chances as they failed to test Basford keeper Saul Deeney.
Eventually, it was Prescot who made the breakthrough with Cables attacker Kallan Murphy opened his account for the season as he managed to wriggle away from Basford challenges and slot the ball home to make it 1-0 in the 32nd minute.
Prescot had no luck as they pushed for a second before half-time and Basford ended the half lucky to only be at a one goal deficit.
The Ambers grew into the game in the second half with hosts having their fair share of meaningful possession.
But it was Prescot who continued to have the better opportunities as a goal bound header was seemingly blocked by a Basford hand but despite strong appeals from the Cables players’ the referee waved play on.
The hosts eventually made headway as strong penalty appeals were again met with no reaction from the referee before Ambers skipper Matt Thornhill found space in the box to guide a header into the corner of the net in the 75th minute.
Much like the away side in the first half, Basford pushed for a second but almost conceded themselves as Prescot fired a shot against the post in the final minute.
The Ambers next game is a visit to Workington on Tuesday (November 26) and is a 7:45pm kick off.
