Formula E is a relatively new form of electric motorsport series with its roots in wanting to “drive change” and bring awareness to the global climate crisis.
The season opener for the 2021 race calendar was to be held on January 16, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic causing disruptions the races have had to be postponed leaving several fans of the sport distraught.
The seventh-running of the season is now due to commence in Saudi Arabia in a never-before-seen spectacle in the sport on the streets on Ad Diriyah, a night race on the 26th and 27th later this month.
Given its relatively new status, Formula E fulfilled the requirements to be identified as a world championship and has since received formal confirmation to be accepted as a world championship series for this upcoming season with several top manufacturers and A-list drivers taking part.
This official confirmation has sparked the interest of several drivers and manufacturers to drive and invest in the progressive sport as electric mobility could possibly be the future in our everchanging world.
Prestigious brands such as McLaren and Lotus as well as more consumer-friendly manufacturers such as Hyundai and Kia are amongst other rumoured entrants to the sport in the coming years while brands such as Porsche, BMW, Audi, DS, Nissan and Mahindra presently dominate the leaderboard.
The series has also seen the enthusiasm and almost a fight for the limited racing seats from young and old talents from various other single seater motorsport series such as Formula 2 and DTM championships while also being a great supportive platform to include more women in motorsport.
The sport is yet to confirm an official race calendar due to the current crisis, however, the first race will take place on the streets of Saudi Arabia on January 26 and 27.
