On 9th October 2019, the NTU Media Societies, FlyFM, TrentTV and Platform Magazine all competed in two charity netball matches to raise money for Student Minds, a mental health charity.
All the players taking part helped to raise awareness of mental health, especially in places like University and schools where the majority of the population are students 18-21 years old and are most likely to have difficulty keeping an eye on their mental health.
āStudent Run Self Helpā was founded in 2009 following the success of their student led support groups for students who were experiencing mental health difficulties at University.
Dr Nicola Byrom (who also previously experienced mental health) set up the organisation aiming to make it easier for students with eating disorders to access support.
In 2013, they rebranded to āStudent Mindsā and merged with āMental Wealth UKā who were a network of student led campaign groups helping to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and wellbeing, and also to encourage people to speak up about their mental health.

I had the privilege of taking over TrentTV & Platform Magazineās Instagram accounts to post live updates of the matches. First up, TrentTV played Platform Magazine with TrentTVās Ella Stirling as the umpire. Although Platform had an amazing warm up session (led by Harvey) and managed to score one point in the third quarter, they still lost 5-1 to TrentTV.
Over on the Trent TV Instagram, Jessica Coppins spoke about how the three societies came together in order to raise money for charity, and that any support to the cause would be greatly appreciated!
For the second game it was Platform Magazine against FlyFM and again Platform were defeated…7-0. But itās the taking part and raising awareness that counts…right?
After Platform were defeated by both other societies, it was FlyFM and TrentTV who were battling it out for the winning position.
Jessica Coppins was the umpire for this game, and after lots of fouls, throw-ons and close shots of the hoop, it was TrentTV who lead 3-1 in the third quarter.
FlyFm managed to pull one back making the score 3-2, but then TrentTV stormed ahead 4-2 after having another successful ādunkā.
In the end it was TrentTV who came out on top, beating FlyFM 5-3.
Overall rankings: (1) – TrentTV, (2) – FlyFM, (3) – Platform Magazine.
