Varsity Football 2025 Preview: NTU looking to ‘fill the shoes’ of last year’s team when they face UON next week

Last year, Nottingham Trent University edged past rivals University of Nottingham to win the title and are confident of retaining the title, despite a much changed side.

Varsity Football returns to Notts County’s Meadow Lane after a six-year absence, and it is set to reignite both universities’ rivalries as it kicks off week three of Varsity.

In last year’s match, former NTU and current Harrogate Town striker Tom Cursons stole the show as he bagged NTU’s winning penalty at Basford United’s Greenwich Avenue.

A win on Monday (April 28) could make it four successive Varsity football wins for the team in pink, and captain Callum Burkey thinks his side are in good stead.

“For the Varsity game, you have to be positive and really go out there believing in the group,” Callum said.

“We have been working hard this year and with a whole new team, it’s taken some time to gel together as a group, but we are improving every week and look to get our win during Varsity against a good side.”

Having won three consecutive Varsity’s, Callum says there is even more importance to winning this years match.

“I can’t tell you enough the importance of winning it this year. It is one of the biggest games of the year and means so much to the university and the club as a whole.

“I feel that from the start of the season, we have progressed a lot and have a really good chance of winning. Our team is very different from last year, but I feel that as a team we have improved a lot, and with good players having left, we hope the new boys can fill their shoes,” Callum said.

The Varsity fixture will kick off at 7pm on Monday (April 28) at Meadow Lane, with tickets still available to buy here.
