“Travel far enough, and you’ll find yourself,”
- The Sophisticated Hunter-Gatherer
He or she travels to gather anything and everything that highlights their experiences. Once caught, these are meticulously pinned in memory and proudly displayed in conversation. They also love to name-drop (“you haven’t really lived until you’ve ridden a gondola through the canals of Venice.”)
Most likely to be: anywhere with souvenirs like seashells, keychains, even coloured sand.
2. The Techie
The techie buys the camera, and then plans the trip to use the camera. Panoramic scenes, birds, animals, locals, interesting routes of museums, exhibitions, fairs, graffiti walls, food, and themselves; nothing goes unphotographed.
Most likely to be: anywhere that looks good in HDR
3. The Conformist
A dreary universal type. The conformist travel not for personal satisfaction but for social acceptance – perhaps even finds personal satisfaction in social acceptance. Destinations are chosen from a limited, unimaginative, class-determined table d’hôte menu. It applies across the social spectrum. The conformist can be spotted from Paris to Costa Rica. The point isn’t where you’ve been but what your friends think about where you’ve been.
4. The Planner
They are perhaps the most organised types of travellers. They like to plan out and schedule any trip to the T. Planners often have a limited amount of time and want to cram as many things in as possible to get the absolute most from the trip. They also tend to know more about a place before they travel than most people who’ve been there. Some people are just built this way, and while I could never travel with The Planner, I salute them.
Most likely to be: anywhere on their pre-planned itinerary
5. The Party Animal
They do not hit the popular spots and neither do they take part in organized events. The Party Animal is in search of those destinations that have vibrant party scenes. They love letting loose and being the centre of attention. They are super energetic, and they are most definitely up for that late-night dance party.
Most likely to be: among loud music and drinks
6. The Nomad
The complete opposite of the planners, and are quite questionable travellers. Their trips are spontaneous, unplanned and may involve them being guided by other people, or going somewhere just for the sake of it. But even though their trips may be hustled, they’re almost always interesting. They usually get sucked in a whirlwind of night-outs by the Party Animal, and can only be taken out by The Planner.
Most likely to be: still figuring it out
