A guide for International students

A year ago, as I finished packing up items my family deemed necessary while travelling some 7000 miles from India to UK, I remember being more anxious than Iā€™d ever been before.

Living in a new culture and country is exciting but can also be a challenge. However, it is not hard as you believe it to be. Here is a short guide to help you settle in as an international student in UK;

1) Dealing with culture shock

Prior to your arrival you may have thought you knew a lot about UK. But once youā€™re there, things may be quite different from what you expected. But remember youā€™re not alone. Make an effort to talk to other international students who may be going through the same thing as you.

  • Add a personal touch- pictures of your friends and family- to your new room.
  • Talk to your course mates. Iā€™m sure they are as curious and nervous as you are. So be confident and take the first step to engage in conversation.
  • Join clubs and societies. Meet people through a shared interest.

2) Student drinking culture

The drinking culture in UK might be different from what youā€™re used to.

  • Pubs sell a range of non-alcoholic drinks as well as alcohol. So if youā€™re invited to go out see them as opportunities to socialize even if you donā€™t drink alcohol.
  • Ā However, do not feel pressured into anything you are uncomfortable with. Find alternative ways to socialize. Rest assured there will be more people like you.

3) British weather

You may not be used to the dampness of the UK winter months. So remember to pack plenty of weather appropriate clothing.

4) Food

The UK supermarkets and stores are stocked with international foods. So donā€™t worry about missing the taste of home.

5) Social roles

Things like public display of affections or same-sex couples are socially accepted in UK, so respect these differences even if they take you by surprise!

Above all else, treat your time in the UK as a chance to make new friends. And enjoy it! Remember, everyone is in the same boat.
