Halloween is around the corner, and you do not fancy wearing your devil’s costume for the third time in a row. Fear not (save the fear for the Halloween house) – we have compiled the best costumes for you, your best friends and your partners!
A big trend this year is recreating major pop-culture moments and impersonating movie characters – both from new movies and all-time classics.
Many people will agree that Jennifer’s Body is THE 2000’s comedy horror movie. It is still one of the most watched movies of that genre – and 2000s fashion is back in style – so it only seems fitting to include Jennifer, the man-eating cheerleader, in the list. Jennifer’s look is fairly easy to recreate: if you do not want to buy a cheerleader uniform, just dress in a low-rise skirt, tank top and white jacket and do not spare on the fake blood!
Another costume that we will be seeing for sure this year is Alice from Don’t Worry Darling: think 1950’s updo, earrings, a white dress and a blood-smeared midsection. If you do not want to ruin your favourite white dress, make sure to check out Primark, Next or amazon!
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie of the year is Top Gun: Maverick, so many fans will want to pay tribute to Tom Cruise’s character. Movie-accurate pilot suits are available online, but for most people, the price of £150 is a big stretch for one night out. A good alternative is either a green bomber jacket or a black leather jacket paired with jeans and a white shirt, and pilot sunglasses – there you have a look!
The movie IT is a horror classic, so Pennywise the dancing clown makes a great costume – scares guaranteed! Any yellow clothing works for this (if you do not want to splurge on his metallic costume) as the focus is on the makeup and wig: an orange wig, white face paint and the iconic red grimace are what turns you into Pennywise; you will get bonus points for a red balloon!
If you cannot face Halloween alone and want a partner by your side for the spookiest night of the year, there are endless options to pair up your costumes! What do they say? Shared fright is half the fright…
With the newest Batman having premiered earlier this year, a Batman and Catwoman costume for sure needs to be featured. The costumes consist of a cape and mask for Batman and a catsuit and ears for Catwoman (tight black trousers and a shirt will do the job just as well).
If neither you nor your partner/friend is up for a catsuit, a Batman and Robin duo will probably be the better option: Robin’s costume requires an eye mask and a cape – if you want to be authentic, a red shirt and green trousers underneath are your best call!
For fans of Euphoria, a Cassie and Maddie costume might be the right fit: you can either go matching in leggings and crop tops, or in blue cheerleading outfits. What really makes this outfit is the makeup and hair: lots of glitter, eyeshadow and a half-up, half-down hair will turn you into the iconic girls for Halloween.
If you are not a fan of the movies, do not worry: there are plenty of costume options that do not require you to copy a movie character!
A great option would be dressing up as a ringmaster – there is something scary about circuses… This costume needs a red suit and hat (available on amazon) and clown-style face makeup. If you want to add a cherry on top, show up with a dancing cane in your hand!
Alternatively, dressing up as a grim reaper is a Halloween classic. All you need is a hooded cloak and a scythe – you can also add a skull mask and skeleton gloves, but before going into a club, it is probably better to take those off!
Lastly, you cannot go wrong with a witch or a wizard! A pointy hat, wand and scary makeup could be a great last-minute look if you do not have a lot of time for your costume.
If you would prefer to shop in person rather than ordering your costumes online, Nottingham has a variety of stores to get your outfits from. The most well-known is probably Luvyababes in the Victoria Centre – where you can find anything and everything you are looking for. Aside from that, Primark and TK Maxx also offer a range of Halloween products ranging from makeup to decor and beyond.
Happy Halloween everyone! Stay safe and spooky!
