The great English staycation – where to go and what to see

After months of lockdown, us Brits have finally had some good news. From the fourth of July, we will be able to go on holiday again!

Granted, the relaxed restrictions only apply to holidays in England, but a staycation is better than no vacation at all! We will keep dreaming about the sandy beaches of Spain and other exotic locations, but for the time being, the English seaside will have to do.

However, there are actually many hidden (or not so hidden) gems in the country when it comes to holiday spots. Here are just five of our favourite locations for a good old British summer getaway.

1. The Lake District

The clue is in the name – The lakes of the Lake District are truly stunning

The Lake District is a fantastic choice for a staycation. Situated in a National Park, the Lake District is excellent if you like a walking holiday. With many beautiful mountains, hills and countryside treks, you really are spoilt for choice.

There are lots of quaint towns and villages in the Lake District to stay in, however, we would particularly recommend choosing a base in Keswick. The market town is in the North of the area, but only a short drive away from other popular towns, such as Windermere and Ambleside.

2. Cornwall

From the Lake District in the North to Cornwall in the South, England definitely does not lack staycation opportunities. Cornwall is another common choice for holidaymakers who don’t fancy venturing too far from home, and it’s not hard to see why.

In Cornwall, you’ll find some of the best beaches around. If chilling on a beach isn’t really your thing, you could instead take a trip to the Eden Project, a botanical garden located in Bodelva.

Cornwall, in general, is a lovely place to go in the summer months. However, if you are stuck on where to visit in particular, you could choose to stay in the popular towns of Padstow, Newquay, St Ives or Falmouth.

3. The Yorkshire Dales

The weather might be a little less reliable up in Yorkshire, but that doesn’t dismiss it as an exceptional place for a staycation. If you love a good walk, but you don’t want to pay Lake District prices, the Yorkshire Dales might be the perfect holiday for you.

Aside from going on walks and taking in the beautiful countryside, you can also soak up the history of the Yorkshire Dales by taking a visit to one of the many castles in the area.

So, instead of paying for an overpriced hotel room this summer, maybe stay in one of the many stunning stone cottages in this particular area of the North of England. Dog-lovers will also be pleased to know that many holiday rentals in the Yorkshire Dales are pet friendly!

4. The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds, another popular holiday destination amongst Brits, is the largest of the 38 ‘Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ in England and Wales.

Scenic views, traditional towns and many walks and cycle trails are what you’ll get on a staycation to the Cotswolds. If you’re looking for outdoor activities to take part in, why not take a trip on the Gloucester narrowboats or soak up some history at Blenheim Palace.

5. The Peak District

Last, but by no means list, is the Peak District. Located in the heart of the country, with close proximity to the cities of Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester, the Peak District is the perfect holiday destination.

The Peak District has lots to offer and is much more than just incredible scenery. Castles, museums, country park’s and even a theme park could be on your itinerary if you choose to have your staycation in this part of the country.

So, what are you waiting for? Book your English summer holiday today!
