Top tips for surviving lockdown with your family

We are now in week five of lockdown. Five whole weeks of having no physical contact with the outside world. No morning gym sessions, no girls or lads’ nights out, and no popping over to nans for a bacon sandwich. For some, this isn’t a problem but for others, it is quite literally proving to be strenuous torture.

As the lockdown continues, and the family frictions grow, here are some tips to prevent unnecessary arguments from taking over your household!

1. Clean up after yourself

Most of us have already been blessed with witnessing the mental breakdowns of our parents discovering a messy bedroom, so it’s obvious they’re likely to reoccur. So, make sure to keep your shared spaces clean by tidying and cleaning up after yourself.

2. Take advantage of the once a day outdoor exercise rule

It’s increasingly frustrating living in lockdown. As the days get longer, distancing yourself from the shared four walls will not only relieve your frustration but help clear your mind. According to MIND, being outside can “improve moods and reduce feelings of stress or anger.” It’s important to get a change of scenery, yet make sure to stick to government guidelines!

3. Limit your time on social media

When in the company of others, it’s good to be present and spending too much time on social media can cause tension between relationships. At time’s like these, it’s important to maintain a good balance between connecting online and socially with your family.

4. Hold family game nights

Whether you decide to play a board game, host quiz nights or dive deep into Twister, having a laugh with each other can help improve home environments and cut any built-up tension. It gives you and your family a break from the current events and can provide something to look forward too!

5. Keep close relationships with other family and friends

It’s important not to cut yourself off with the outside world. Make sure you’re keeping in close contact with other family members and friends; talking to different people will give you a sense of normality and ease any irritation you may be feeling!

6. Know your own habits

It’s very easy to notice other people’s most irritating actions but ignore your own. Being aware of your own habits can help avoid annoyance between you and other members of your family. If you’re a snorer, don’t fall asleep on the sofa. Ever.

7. Have some you-time

Spending some time to yourself enables you to reflect on your own thoughts and feelings. Whether you’re involved in a hobby or having quiet time reading or pampering, it’s important to have some time alone to diffuse any tensions in your head or around your home.

8. Communicate

Although it may cause arguments at first, communicating is the best way to diffuse any unsolved issues. Make sure to interact, check-in and most importantly, be there for each other.
