COIN made their Nottingham debut on November 21 at Rescue Rooms as part of their Uncanny Valley tour, with the UK being the closing leg of the tour after completing over 40 dates across America and Europe this year.
Although the rain poured, eager fans huddled under the shelter as they waited for the doors to open, with many waiting for several hours.
Rescue Rooms even decided to play a couple of COIN’s most popular songs, including ‘Talk Too Much’, to build the excitement for this sold-out show.
At 7pm, fans flocked into the venue, filling the entirety of the floor and balcony ready for the American pop-rock band to take the stage.
2022 has been an exciting year for lifelong-friends Chase Lawrence, Ryan Winnen and Joe Memmel, particularly after COVID-19 bought their 2020 touring plans to a halt, with the band supporting Australian band Five Seconds of Summer on the UK leg of their arena tour at the beginning of the year after releasing their fifth album ‘Uncanny Valley’ in March.
The opening act was American indie band Flor, consisting of members Zach Grace, McKinley Kitts, Dylan Bauld and Kyle Hill.
With the crowd instantly warming to them, their set included songs ‘Come Over Now’ and ‘Skate’.
The band even took to Twitter after the show, writing ‘nvm sorry london. nottingham got the best show’.
As the time reached just past 9pm, the anticipation within the crowd began to grow as it was time for COIN.
Screams within the crowd rose as the lights dimmed and their ‘Learning’ interlude from their most recent album was played through the speakers.
The band then made their way on-stage before the beat dropped into their first song of the night ‘Watering a Dead Plant’.
The set was compiled of a range of songs stretching across most of their discography including ‘Hannah’, ‘I Want It All’, ‘You Are The Traffic’ and ‘Take A Picture’.
Throughout the night, lead singer of the band Chase Lawrence encouraged the ever-growing energy within the crowd, particularly during their high-energy songs include ‘Into My Arms’ and ‘Youuu’.
In contrast, the bands’ slower songs that were played during the set, including ‘Let It All Out (10:05)’ and ‘Malibu 1992’ conveyed power and emotion, especially as the fans screamed each of the final choruses in unison.
Lawrence even took the time to address the crowd on a more personal level, thanking them for making the band’s first Nottingham show so special, promising that they would return.
Another highlight of the night was the visuals that accompanied each song. These included prominent lyrics from each of the songs as well as displays of nature and imitated visuals that you may expect at an arena show, although the venue was only a capacity of 450.
As the set came to a close, COIN decided to end the night with hit single and fan-favourite ‘Crash My Car’, with Chase Lawrence even leaning over the barrier while grabbing onto several fans’ hands to sing the closing verse.
COIN put on an unforgettable show at Rescue Rooms on the penultimate night of their Uncanny Valley tour, with it being one of the best concerts I’ve been to this year.
We hope to see them return to Nottingham very soon.
